Recently we took my sister, brotherinlaw and my 2 nieces to Dinant as a daytrip. We bought tickets in the center of town and went up to the top of the cliff to see the Citadel. You can either climb 400 steps or ride the cablecar. We took the cablecar. A tour of the citadel is given approx. every hour. They have the tour times listed. The tour is only in French and Flemish but they give you an English pamphlet describing the sites. The guide also was able to answer questions in English. Definitely take the tour even if you speak English You get to see all of the parts of the Citadel since some parts are not accessible without the guide. The best part came at the end in an unusual room. I won’t ruin the surprise but everyone enjoyed the tour. Stay on course No panic – Rurph via Tripadvisor Had no idea Dinant was as large a town as it is. Drove up the hill to the top part of the Citadel from where the expanse of the whole area is viewed. What a fortress I got dizzy from the sheer cliffview from the walkways Ticket taker did not speak very much English and while walking around some man spoke to us in French but I was not sure of what he was saying exactly, save for the fact that a tour would take place sometime…we explored areas we could including parts I now believe we should not have gone into ourselves…the WWI area. Scared the devil out of me as I did not know what to expect and kept going through. How did I know it was part of the “tour” Saw a crowd form and we got in it the tour; no english spoken either but that was okay we could figure it out sort of with the help of signage. No pamphlet either. The tour takes you to areas that you cannot go alone; so get into a tour even if it is not in your particular language. Never did take the cable car down to town as we were sort of on a time constraint. What a tragic place with all the death throughout the eras.
